I'm no expert on coal mines, but from either my own knowledge or many conversations with my dad, I know that Allgeheny, Beaver and Butler counties also had a lot of coal mines, besides Washington and Greene Cos. Most, if not all, of the mines in Allegheny are played out, whereas they are still mining in Washington and Greene.

In Allegheny here are a few:

Mine No.3 run by the Pittsburgh Termianl Co. was in the area of Bethel Park which is along Rt. 88 near the Washington Junction for the "T".

Coverdale, which is now a section of Bethel Park, is a mining town. It did have another name, which is escaping me at the moment.

No. 10 in Library, south of Bethel Park was run by Con Coal.

There were mines in Castle Shannon, Overbrook, Mt Oliver, Bridgeville. To the north, Elfinwild was a mining town...there was one that only closed in the 60's on the Rt 8 side of North Park, the area's name began with a "W".... Dang, there goes the memory again.
