Clare...
You may be just the person to clear up a few things I've wondered about. I'd
heard a while back on one of the lists of some sort of merger between
Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com. The idea peaked my interest, as I subscribe to both.
Genealogy.com has just finished indexing their 1860 census w/images (index
entry with image hotlink), and had already featured the 1870, 1900, and 1910
with the index/image combination. Ancestry's advantage had been the
index/imaging combo for the 1790-1850, plus 1920 and 1930. To date, they've only
partially completed the 1860 and 1870 in this format. So, it's paid to have both.
The second question concerned me as an AOL user. AOL has a rather quick
timeout problem, which Genealogy.com recognizes and suggests going directly to IE
before accessing their site. Is this still a current concern at
Genealogy.com? Navigating Ancestry.com with AOL hasn't caused this problem.
Thanks for stepping in and providing hard answers based on experience. In
trying to help Allegheny listers, I find myself running back and forth between
the two census image sources, depending on what year is required, etc.
