Hello all. Sent my issue to the Advanced Research mailing list and one
of the people on that list guessed that he was in the 13th Coast
Artillery Corps, NY, NY. Weird, but Friday, after much manipulating of
the draft card, I had come up with 13th cac N. Y. N. Y. I really feel
that this is correct. So, thanks to everyone that assisted me in this.
I am going to send off for info and see what comes about.

A little more research and I found that the United States Army "Order of
Battle" (basically, the organization of the Army) in 1914 included the
following National Guard Units in New York City - the 13th Company of
the 9th Artillery District and Headquarters, 13th Artillery District.
I'm pretty sure the last 4 characters on line 11 are N.Y.N.Y. (note the
capital "N" in Naturalized citizen, in line 4), but now am confused by
the branch designation, P.A., R.A., or whatever. I don't really think
it means "Regular Army, and I don't think there was anything like
"Public Affairs" in the early 1900's.
Dawn, if you do get "finality" here, either through NARA or some other
source, please keep this list informed.
Thanks.

Ted may have hit on an additional line of attack. Try to convert it to a
multiple choice problem. William was born in 1888 and had spent five
years in the Army prior to his draft registration. Keeping it at round
numbers for simplicity. Let's suppose that he enlisted at the age of 20;
c 1908.
His draft registration was in 1917; he was a bookkeeper at the
Chronicle. You said the family settled in NY, which increases the
likelihood that the last two letters of line 11 were an NY.
There weren't any wars the US was involved in at the time he was in the
Army; the Regular Army was small. How many 13th ?????? from NY can there
be in that time frame? It may be a very small set. That might be a
difficult thing to find on the web, but it might be a no-brainer for
NARA if you sent them a copy of the WWI Draft registration.

He was born in London, but immigrated to the U.S. when he was 1. His
family settled in New York. Interesting idea about the Canadian Army
though.

My take...
Since he was born in London, I suspect that he was a Private in the
Canadian Army for 5 years. The web site,
http://www.regiments.org/regiments/na-canada/lists/cargxrefn.htm shows
that there were 3, possibly 4, units designated 13th during his time
frame. The 13th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Forces (CEF), 13th
Royal Regiment, and 13th Scottish Light Dragoons. Possibly included is
13th Canadian Mounted Rifles, CEF.
Good luck.

RE: Private P.A. vs. R.A.
The "P" in Private is a different stroke than the first letter of PA vs.
RA. The stroke looks more like in line 2, the street address, which I
read as more likely Richard Ave. as opposed to Pichard Ave.
Now for multiple guess. I'll put in a "?" where I decline to guess the
letter....
13th ?acK?NY or 13th ?acK?KY
The character after acK almost looks like it was a "Y" and then the
writer scribbled out the left upward branch of the "Y". But then it
might be a pixel resolution problem. Maybe it's supposed to be a "4"
Good luck,
Jim

Subject: [ALL] Help with WWI Registration card
Hello all. I have a problem. LOL. Who doesn't, with genealogy. I
have found my Great Grandfather's WWI Registration card on Ancestry.com,
but guess what? I can read some of it. I can't make out what line 11
says. I can see Private, and P.A? I think that's supposed to be R.A.
for regular army, but I can't be sure. Then I see 5 years, but I can't
make out anything after the 13th. Anybody want to look at this record
and see what you see?
William G. Scoltock
Born April 15, 1888
London, England
Would greatly appreciate some help on this. I want to see if I can
order the record from NARA, but I need his previous unit.
