I thought the "inmate" explanation was interesting, so I went back to check
the other men on the census, just out of curiosity. Out of fifty men, only 5
were listed as married. The others were either widowed (like my relative),
or single. I guess that's another way to think of the word usage when doing
research, instead of just assuming, like I did in the beginning, that they
were in jail.
Another question I want to throw out there regarding this person, using all
of your collective experiences:
The person I am researching is Joseph (Jozef) Taranowski. It was not a
common last name, especially here in the Pittsburgh area. I have information
putting his birthdate as 1883 in Poland. I later find a 1930 census of
"Joseph Taranowski", with an approx. birth year of 1875 (this is the Mayview
census). Everything else on the census, except where he was born, is listed
as unknown. How possible is it that this is MY Joseph? Is it possible that
they could be that far off on his age? This branch has been excruciating for
me to research because of my lack of experience and know-how. Just wondering
if anyone else had experiences with records on the same person being so
contradictory.
