I sent the following message last week, but it was bounced because I had not
followed correct protocol for advising change of email address. Oh,
well...... I forward it now.

The exchange of information on this question from Jeannine's first inquiry
less than 24 hours ago (!) has been amazingly wonderful. I have no personal
connection with this inquiry, but am very grateful for the information
passed on, and, more especially, to be in the company (a lister) of so many
helpful, caring, knowledgeable people. I shall save the information.......

Not to muddy the waters, but it is my recollection that the term "Inmate"
was used in the earliest Fayette Co., PA Censuses to denote an unmarried
male living in someone else's household. The term certainly gave me pause
when I first saw it, but I now know that in the 16th Century it meant a
person residing in an Inn - called an Inn Mate - the words merged - second
'n' dropped, etc. And, the meaning has been expanded - as has been so well
described in the exchange of information on "institutions."
