Pat,
I never understood why mental disease or incarceration induced such a
stigma upon a family. Almost every family that I've researched had
somebody in a mental hospital or jail. I have one relative, don'[t
ask me how but we share the same last name, that was in the 1860
census on the SS and then disappeared. 50 years later, what I
presume to be his son shows up in the Mission St area and then he
disappeared. One of the two, I forget which, reportedly killed the
warden of a jail in Indiana Co. I've yet to make the trip to get the
whole story.
A cousin of one of my ancestors killed his own wife and also spent
some time at Woodville. Go figure. It happens.
A firefighter that worked for me came from a large family but one of
his brother's killed his wife (his, not the firefighter's). It
didn't change how I felt about this firefighter. He was one helluva
good worker and a good man to boot.
