For those of you listers whose ancestry might include German speakers from
Schleswig-Holstein, there is a wonderful group called the American Schleswig
Holstein Historical Society (ASHHS). It is headquartered out in Iowa, where my
hubby's parents settled in America. The whole area was a "little Germany"
until the Lusitania was sunk, and then it all went "underground." It was
always spoken at home when they didn't want the little kids to know what they were
talking about. Sadly, the language was lost over time to the younger
generation, except for the attempts on the part of this organization (ASHHS) to
revive the mother tongue.
Every year or so, they have an annual meeting in S-H, and we went in 2006.
Had a blast discovering not only the Mom's S-H roots, but farther east, toward
the Polish border, we found lots of native villages of my husband's Dad's
roots. Went into the church where his ancestor was married before coming to
Indiana in 1869. Fabulous. Check it out:
