Diane, I just emailed you the two pages from the divorce index showing Barbara and Charles Opperman. Hopefully, you can open them.

Hi Wilberta,
Thanks, this is extremely helpful but I still could not find Opperman until
used the key letters RM rather than MN. So precidence must be given to the
rder of the key letters in the name and not the order of the key letters
hemselves. Yes?

Jim, these indexes use the Russell Index System. The key letters are
L-M-N-R-T. So, for Opperman, first you select surname O. Then the
first initial of given name, then... use the key letters. DON'T
count the first letter of the surname, but go across the surname and
look for an L, none? look for an M, yes there is one, next look for an
N, yes there is one. So the key letters for Opperman are MN. Go down
the first column of the 'given name page' and find MN, then go across
until you get to the given name initial - in this case, B, for Barbara
or C for Charles. Click
> on the page in the block where the Key Letters and given name initial
intersects and it will take you to the correct page.

PS: The Key Letters for Strutz would be TR.

This is new to me too. But if you go to http://dcr.alleghenycounty.us/
and ollow the "Dept. of Court Records - Civil/Family Division Indices
(Prior to 995)" then click on "Ejectment & Miscellaneous Index". I
clicked on "O"
for
he first letter in the Opperman surname and it dropped down a pair of
given ame initials, "A-J" and "K-Z", I selected the first which should
cover both iven names Barbara and Charles. This is where I get
confused. The next two etters of the surname are "PP" which are not
listed in the column and so we re instructed to select "misc". I
clicked the intersection of "misc" and ither "B" for Barbara or "C"
for Charles but could not find the Oppermans isted. Could somebody
tell me where I went wrong?
Thanks...

Diane, I, too, think the Charles and Barbara Upperman in the 1870
census in Reserve township are good candidates for your GGgrands.

Looking in the Allegheny County Ejectment Index that is online, there
is a Barbara Opperman who filed for a divorce against a Charles
Opperman on January 22, 1875 and again on September 5, 1875, but no
divorce decree was issued and nothing entered after 1875.

Also, go to familysearch.org and type in Karl Upperman. Someone in
Nevada has entered this same family in the Ancestral file. The
entrant has exadt dates for all eight children. Perhaps you can
identify one of them as your Ggrand by the birth date. One daughter,
Bertha, married a Jackson Weddell.
She died in Ohio and her death certificate can be found online at
Family Search's Pilot Search.

I wouldn't put much weight on the difference in ages on the censuses.
You see that all the time. Same with names - Germans had more than
one name and used different names on records. For instance, my gg was
Maria Katharina and sometimes records have her listed as Maria and
others have her listed as Katharina.

All leads to check out. - Wilberta

Thanks Dawn,

But I don't think that is a match. Charles Opperman was 51 yrs old at
the time of death, 26 Nov 1876 which would give his birth year as
1825. The Charles that you found would have been born in 1832......

I found Charles Opperman as a stone mason back in an 1857 directory,
but no listings after. He served in the Civil War. I do have that
info.

The only census record I have found that fits is 1860 and it lists "C.
Opperman" b. about 1826,
"H. Opperman (age 29)"--I assume this would be his wife....There are
also
2
children listed:
1. C. Opperman--age 5 (about 1855)
2. C. Opperman--age 3 (about1857)

Thanks again Bella

Diane

I looked in 1870 census for anyone named Charles, no surname, in
Reserve
Twp.
How about Charles, 38y,& Barbara,36y, UPPERMAN?? His occupation
is a stone
mason.
Does this fit?
There are a number of kids, one of which is Charles, 13y.
no relation to me, just helping.

Hi all,
After over a year, I finally had a breakthrough with Charles
OPPERMAN.
We
knew little about a murder suicide, but just found the info in 2
newspapers
(1. Daily Gazette-Williamsport, 2. Indiana Democrat).
Charles Opperman killed his wife and then himself on Nov. 26,
1876 in
Reserve Twp off of Perrysville Road..
I NEED to know the name of his wife. She is only mentioned as Mrs
Opperman...I've looked everywhere I know of so far. They only
appear in
the
1860 Census with only the initial "H" for her first name.
Any help greatly appreciated.
