Could someone provide a clear definition of GEDCOM and its use and/or
value?

Myheritage is another start-up that's trying to gather people's GEDCOMs
and has absolutely no comparison to Ancestry which has millions of
actual records and abstracts of records. So far there isn't any other
genealogy site to rival Ancestry but FamilySearch and for the *most*
part, they have complementary instead of duplicate information. Heritage
Quest still exists as library subscriptions but they haven't updated in
a long time. For those who can't afford the subscription to Ancestry,
most libraries have subscriptions.
