In reply to the person who asked about combatting spam, here are my opinions:
How do you read your e-mail? Do you use POP mail or IMAP? If you use POP
mail, well, I use
MailWasher, and I got it FOR FREE! It works OK for me, but it only works
for my POP e-mail
account, not my IMAP account. It looks like Spam Remedy works for IMAP as
well, but I'm not
really familiar with it, I just read about it on the website. So it may be
worth paying for a spam
product if you need it for IMAP mail, I don't think I've found a free spam
product for IMAP mail.
MailWasher (see www.mailwasher.net) identifies what it thinks is spam
before you read it, but it lets
you override it in case it made a mistake. You can add to a "friends"
list, to always let their mail
get thru, and add to a spam list, to always block e-mail from certain
addresses. You can delete
the message before reading it, and also send a "bounce back" message, so it
looks to the spammer
like your e-mail address doesn't exist, so maybe they will remove you from
their mailing list. You
call up MailWasher before you call up your regular e-mail client.
If you go to www.downloads.com, and search for "spam" in the 1st box at
the top of the screen and select
"In Downloads" in the other entry box, you will see a list of anti-spam
products. Some are free, some have a
cost, some are free to try for a while, then you must either buy them or
uninstall them. Many have been
reviewed by people who have tried them (but keep in mind that not all
people know what they are
talking about). If you use Outlook Express to read your mail, it seems you
have more options in
anti-spam software, but I think it's a bad idea to use Outlook Express, so
many viruses take advantage
of it.
If you REALLY want to do your part to combat spam, sign up with
www.spamcop.net. This doesn't really
help you immediately. But it helps the "spam police" identify spammers and
hopefully shut them down (YES!).
You can sign up for free to forward spam to them. (You have to know how to
send them the full headers, etc,
so it can get a little bit complicated, but to me, if it shuts the spammers
down, it's worth the effort!) I just love
it when it appears that I am the first one to report a spammer, I get a
message saying "Yum, this spam is
fresh!" and they give me a list of who they are reporting the spammer to.
