Well we all know the Civil War ended slavery.....but I'm talking about the
practices of Bedford Co in the 1830-40s. Was it an uncommon practice? Was it
already outlawed in PA? I'm not familiar with when it was stopped there. George
Lee came to Bedford Co. in 1812. And according to an article about a Dunkle
reunion in 1900 he did have slaves at one time. "He had lived in MD where he
owned property and then he went to GA to see about a lot of slaves". Then the
War of 1812 broke out and he moved to Cumberland Twp. So if he brought a slave
with him, I'm thinking it's a possiblility this could be a clue. Of course
there could have been a lot of black men named George Lee.
