Hello Phyllis,
It was not a requirement in PA to register deaths until about 1906, as I
recall. So, you will not find a death certificate registered with the state
of PA for the year 1902. However, you may find a few deaths registered with
Somerset County (where Wellersburg is located). Most deaths were not
recorded at that time, isn't that a shame. You might also try the Somerset
Co. Hist. Soc. to see if they have any information on the person that you are
looking for. You could find CHURCH RECORDS listing for your ancestor,
Wellersburg churches have some excellent baptism & death information. The
Hist. Soc. also might have a will, estate probate, orphans court records,
land deeds, tax information, etc., that might assist you in your search.
Wellersburg is immediately next to Maryland and close to Cumberland, MD. You
might also try looking in Cumberland for information on your person. I
understand that the University located in Cumberland has a wonderful
genealogical library. I have HEINER, SCHUNK and SHOEMAKER ancestors buried
in Wellersburg. My ancestor, ADAM COOK, whose tombstone had not been able to
locate for many years, is buried close to Wellersburg. When I finally found
his tombstone (in a cow pasture and laying flat on the ground), I was SO
excited to find out that he died in 1909, when deaths would be registered
with the state of PA. I immediately sent for his death cert. & couldn't wait
until I got it back to find out WHO HIS PARENTS WERE. When I got the death
cert. back, I anxiously opened the letter up, only to discover that his
daughter listed his parents as "UNKNOWN." Now, go figure! Good luck!
