Subject: Tate, Sleighter, email address for Connie Hornbaker

(Please forgive the cross-posting)
The following may be of interest to TATE or SLEIGHTER researchers, but I'm
also interested in making sure this gets to Connie Hornbaker - the email
address I had for her from 1999 bounced... so - Connie - if you are out
there (can somebody help me find her)....
-----------------------
Connie-
Hi - I am assuming you are the same Connie Hornbaker who has a website on
the 'net that contains (several generations back) a William Tate, born about
1813, and his wife, Mary Sleighter, born about 1828.
If not, then please forgive the intrusion - and you can delete the rest of
this email.
My name is Jeff Rinscheid, a descendant of Samuel Robert Tate (through his
son Joseph Walker Tate, born to his second wife, Jane May Hamilton). I've
tried to pull together a lot of the Tates from the Bedford, Penna, area (and
slightly north - into Blair and Clearfield), but still have a long ways to
go.
Your William Tate and Mary Sleighter are intriguing for a couple of reasons,
and I'm wondering if a couple of things are tangled up - which, if
unraveled, might rid me of some of my "extraneous" Tates, and maybe couple
some more...
First, your William is a candidate to be the son of John Tate, who is a son
of Samuel Robert Tate. John, the oldest son, is born about 1790, and dies
before May, 1846, as he is mentioned in the original draft of his father's
will.
Further, "your" William cannot be William, s/o Samuel Robert, as this
William dies in Sept 1846 (I have Sept 2) as he is mentioned as recently
deceased in his father's will's second codicil, written Sept 24, 1846. And
your William is having children in 1848, 1849, and 1858 (and maybe later -
see later here)....
I know that there is a book that shows William Tate, married to Mary
Sleighter, as a son of Samuel Robert Tate. But Samuel Robert Tate's William
is born in 1801; one marrying Sleighter (if that's her - see later) is born
in 1813 or 1814.
I further would like to challenge whether the Mary married to William Tate
is originally a Sleighter - I think he second husband is Sleighter. Here's
why:
In the 1850 West Providence Twp, Bedford County census, William shows up
with his children (George and Joseph) and Mary, born about 1828...and they
are between the SPARKS and SHEEHY.
I didn't find them in 1860 (probably didn't look close enough)... and you
show William dying in the early 1860's...
In the 1870 Monroe Twp, Bedford County census, page 578, household
247/family 248 contains
David SLEIGHTER, 51, farmer
Mary, 41
Isaac, 15
William, 11
Rachel J, 3
Susan, 2
Catherine TATE, 9
William T. TATE, 7
Elmira Hoopengarner, Elmira, 13, domestic servant
I've never been able to sort through these Tates and Sleighters - until I
saw your site.... Note that if this IS Mary Tate (wife of William), then
Catherine Tate would be born 1861 and William T. would be born 1863 (before
you show William dying).
Further, if we just forward to 1880, we find

Notice that this appears to be the same family as 1870 (10 years older), if
we allow for me to have confused David and Daniel (or else the person who
sent this to have confused them). Further, we see that, to Daniel, the two
Tate children are STEPchildren, implying that Mary must be their mother -
which means she was a TATE at one time. Further, they've got a grandson,
names Sparks (and William/Mary used to live near Sparks... so there's the
chance for them to have a daughter who married a Sparks...)
So I'm asserting that Mary (1828ish), who married William Tate (1813-1860's)
is second married to Daniel or David Sleighter, and that's where the fact
she appears to be a Sleighter comes from.
What do you think?
If this is true, then she and William have 5 children:
George, born Dec 1848, who marries several times, including Alvaretta
Cornelius
Joseph, born about 1849, and I suspect he dies young - I can't find one
Lewis Bradshaw, born 1858 (from your records), who marries Mary Frances
Akers
Catherine T., born about 1861, and who marries Tilghman Northcraft
William T., born about 1863 - and who I lose after 1880 census
