Subject: State boundaries - VA, MD, PA
Date: Sat, 23 Mar 2002 11:34:52 -0500
Hello Fellow Listers,
I want to share with you information I received pertaining to state boundaries involving Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Several Listers from other Lists were both gracious and generous and ready to lend a hand when I had inquired about this subject.
For any of you who have ever wondered as I have, what areas of current day PA were once parts of VA? Also, what areas of MD were ever parts of either VA or PA?
I hope this will be of help to any who have questioned this.
Happy Easter, God bless all of you, may the miracle that is Easter be with you,
Ken

"In southwestern Pennsylvania, Virginia clamed the land west of Laurel Ridge
and south of the Conemaugh, Kiskiminetas, Allegheny and Ohio Rivers. The
Virginia territory had several names. First it was the "West Augusta
District", part of Augusta County, VA. Augusta County was created in 1738 by
act of the General Assembly "lying on the northwest side of the top of said
mountains [Blue Ridge], extending thence northerly, westerly and southerly
to the uttermost limits of Virginia" The uttermost limits being the
Mississippi River and French Louisiana".
"In 1776 Yohogania County, Virginia was created from the West Augusta
District and included all of present day Westmoreland County, those parts of
Allegheny and Beaver counties south and east of the Ohio and Allegheny
rivers, those parts of Fayette and Washington counties approximately north
of US 40 between Laurel Ridge and Washington, PA and a line northwest to
Cross Creek and the West Virginia panhandle north of Cross Creek to the Ohio
River. The county seat was at Augusta Town, near present day Washington PA.
Court was also held at Andrew Heath's farm near present day West Elizabeth,
PA. Yohogania County was ceded to Pennsylvania in 1785".
"Also created at the same time were Ohio and Monongalia Counties. They
include parts of present day Fayette, Greene and Washington counties. Ohio
and Monongalia Counties survive today in much smaller size as part of the
State of West Virginia".
"The leaders of Virginia were big thinkers. In 1778 Illinois County, Virginia
was created and made up of the present day states of Ohio, Michigan,
Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. It was ceded to the Federal government in
1784 and became the Northwest Territory".
