For those who have been following the short saga, wherein I found two old
tombstones face down as paving stones in a property that I purchased in
Bedford, I can happily report success in uniting them with their "owners".
Just a tad more detail:
1) John B. HARTLE, died 1865 in the Civil War - has a newer stone in the
Pavia Cemetery, but the head of the Pavia Cem Assn, Mr. Shaffer, said that
they'd be willing to store the headstone I found, and seek out the owners of
the site to see what they wanted done. I returned the stone to said
cemetery, and, while I couldn't quite catch up with the maintenance man, Mr.
McDonald (I had cellphone troubles in calling him), I left the stone with a
note enclosed in plastic near the war memorial at the entrance to the
cemetery - where it could be readily found by someone going into the rather
small cemetery, but would not disturb church-goers into thinking there had
been vandalism.
2) Rosa Corle, died 1880 at age 5. Her parents are buried in the Bedford
Cemetery on Route 220, and there is a marker "R.V." near their stone. I
returned her stone to the groundskeeper, who said he would consult with the
cemetery administration about what specifically to do with it.
Mission accomplished - thanks to many of you from the list helping to solve
the mystery of these two folks last resting places.
