This is an appropriate forum for your situation. We share our experiences
to aid each other in our research. Your scenario seems to be isolated. I
think you should take this situation to the director first. It may be that
there is no policy to guide volunteers. I have been to societies that have
both a donation and tipping policy, usually there is a clearly marked jar
for such financial transactions. Otherwise I take a society bulletin and
contact them later with a letter of thanks and, if appropriate, a check made
out to the society. In some cases there are legal issues, as when the
society is housed in a rent-free public building. Unsolicited donations
sometimes cause the society to return the checks or find alternate places to
deposit the money.
If you cannot resolve this issue with the offending society, you should then
post it's name so that we can all know where this problem is.
