I'm not particularly knowledgeable, but I have read that before 1906 (when
the Bureau of Immigration was set up) you need to look in the courthouse
for the county where the person was living at the time of the
naturalization. Your best bet is to find out where your grandfather was in
1890. Unfortunately the census for that year has been destroyed! However,
city and county directories can be a good source. Sometimes obituaries
will give very useful information. If you know where he was in 1900, work
back. If the family was in the US by 1880, you can find them in the 1880
census at http://www.familysearch.org and that will give you a start.
Good luck!
