Wayne--this is fascinating, thanks so much for sharing it! Among what=20
records did you find this?
Martha,
It was found in a box that had fallen apart and was being stored in a
plastic bag in the basement of the court house. What is odd is that it appears
that back in the 1950's or so, perhaps later, an attempt had been made to
preserve the papers. But they had not made an attempt to unfold them. After almost
200 years of being folded they are falling apart along the folds with the acid
eating away at the rest.
The Records Improvement Committe has asked me to continue the project
started by myself and my wife several years ago. We are now taking a box at a
time and sorting them by record style and carefully unfolding the items and
placing them in acid free folders and then into acid free storage boxes.
A major problem has been that what is in the boxes is not what is
recorded on the outside the box. The particular box being worked on just now is
supposed to contain survey drafts which is not the case. It actually contains some
drafts but this is only about half of the contents. The rest has been estate
records heretofore never known to exist as well as election returns, tax
records, state remission of civil suits. What is a shame is that one of most of the
estates were not even gathered together into a group - they where all loosely
piled together. This means that each piece had to be gone through and placed
in the proper packet.
Hopefully funding will become available in the future to make the records
more accessible to the citizens of the county.
