There is a Loysburg in Bedford Co but a Loysville in Perry Co. Seems
started at the same time and are family. I think brothers. Loysville
started by family that married into the Virginia Purtlebaughs. I think
Bartlebaugh married into the other brother's family but have no proof and
it is just my hunch.
We have looked into the Puterbaugh family history because there are a lot
of Bartlebaughs and Butterbaughs living in Indiana and Clearfield counties
where my John Bartlebaugh ended up in 1820. Bartlebaughs seem to be a
separate family living in the same area as Puterbaugh in early Bedford Co.
No marriages of wives family into either Purterbaugh or vice versa into
Bartlebaugh until much later.
Now it is known there from times long ago, that the Butterbaughs use to
chase anyone who use to call them Bartlebaugh and threaten to shoot them.
The George Butterbaugh you mentioned was even listed on a 1789 tax list as
George Bartlebaugh.
We have had several Y-DNA tests done and can prove that Purtlebaugh and
Bartlebaugh are family since their Y-DNA match. But if there is any
Puterbaugh or Butterbaugh out there that will test their Y-DNA, they can
join our Bartlebaugh sir-name project or start one of there own.
Our hope is sometime to see the tests results of Y-DNA on a Buterbaugh or
Puterbaugh. Then we will know if we are family or not. The paper trail
does not show a connection but maybe before 1750. Only the Y-DNA tests
can give us the answer. Anyone want to see a sir-name project can check
our webpage link. We can give a small discount up to the end of this year.

In reply to your Loy and Bartlebaugh of intermarriage statement. While I
can not say as to whom Martin Loy Sr.'s wife was I can comment on the
Bartlebaugh portion of your email.
In Morrison's Cove the family you are referring to is known as the
Puterbaugh, Puderbaugh, Buterbaugh, Butterbaugh, etc., etc. family.
These are all descendants of George Butterbaugh who died leaving heirs as
named in Orphan's Court dockets as follows: Jacob, Henry, Mary, Christiana,
David and Catharina, all living; and deceased sons George and John.
A portion of these children, and their children, moved several years
later to the Miami Valley of Ohio where there are still descendants to this
day.
If you read it carefully the court records in Bedford county indicate that
George Butterbaugh died in Franklin county, Pennsylvania, and that the
records
were more a case for the petition entered by the eldest living son for the
partitioning of several tracts of land that George had owned in Bedford
county.
I may be mistaken about George dying in Franklin county, but I do know
that he did not die in Woodbury township. One of the guardianships indicates
that the child was to be placed under the guardianship of a resident of Air
township. I checked my vertical files and have never pulled any estate
records for
George Butterbaugh.
I have yet to see any spelling other than those noted above. This after
seeing many of the actual records and not those entered by a clerk's hand
into
the docket books. I do recall that many years ago someone was attempting to
make the case that Bartlebaugh was a variant.
