To RootsWeb Listers,
Whoaaa!
In response to my offer to do lookups in the alphabetized index of
Thomas Westcott's NAMES OF PERSONS WHO TOOK OATH OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE
STATE OF PA 1777-1789 (1992 reprint of 1865 publication), I received 65
lookup requests between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. I am about 1/3 through
the requests, and so far not a single hit. I am surprised and
disappointed at this 100 percent ratio of failures. I'm sure it must be
a wee bit discouraging to everyone who receives negative replies from
me.
Of course I will honor all requests received, but let me remind Listers
that you too can obtain the complete index copied from this publication
by submitting a request through your research assistant at your local
public library. That way you too will have the entire index of this book
at your fingertips. Actually I thought that by describing in my initial
message the process by which I obtained this complete index, a lot of
people would take the hint and get the index for themselves. If you
locate a "wanted" name in the index, then you can submit another request
to the library to have the pertinent page(s) copied and sent to your
library.
Incidentally there was no charge made to me for copying these 19 pages
of index (except for the county taxes which I pay (:D)grin). It came to
me in Pima Co. Arizona from the public library in Dallas TX.
The moral of this story is "Use your public library," especially if you
or your parents pay taxes! I see many, many questions raised on the
genealogical ListServs which could be answered in one's own public
library. You can have the indices of many publications (such as town and
county histories, biographies, genealogies, etc.) searched for surnames
by your local library. I have never received a charge from my public
library for a surname search in the index of a book, and I have had many
such searches done. The Family History Library in Salt Lake City is not
the only helpful library in the country!
