To Greg re perches.
I was tempted to tell you they were fish, but they aren't. A perch is a term
to describe an amount of land which is less than an acre.
"PERCH. A measure of land containing five yards and a half, or sixteen feet
and a half in length; otherwise called a 'rod' or 'pole'." Cowell
"As a unit of measure, a perch of masonry or stone or brick work contains,
according to some authorities and in some localities, sixteen and one-half
cubic feet, but elsewhere, or according to others twenty-five. Unless
defined by statute, it is a very indefinite term and must be explained by
evidence." For case law on the subject I refer the reader to the following
state court decisions as reported in their respective state case decision
books: Harris v. Rutledge, 19 Iowa 388, 87 AM. Dec.441; and Sullivan v.
Richardson, 33 Fla. 1, 14 So. 692. The foregoing is courtesy of Black's Law
Dictionary Fourth edition. There is also a pretty good definition in
Webster's II New Riverside University Dictionary copyrighted 1984.
