Hello Leon,
Dr. Glatfelter's PASTORS AND PEOPLE, vol. 1 (1980), shows only one Mt.
Olivet church. I am not absolutely confident this is the church named in
your query, but depending on the perspective of your source of
information, it may be. This exhaustive work includes all known German
Reformed and Lutheran congregations in the Pennsylvania field between
1717 and 1793.
On p. 225 Dr. Glatfelter writes about congregations gathering for
worship as early as the 1740s in then Huntington Twp., now Latimore Twp.
He refers to this as a relatively isolated area "seventeen miles north
of the Conewago settlement." According to Dr. Glatfelter, a union church
building for the use of both German Reformed and Lutheran congregations
was dedicated here on 15 Apr 1754, and "Lucas Raus began the register
for this church about 1758." A second church building was erected here
in 1795-96. The simple name Bermudian served to identify this church
until the another union church was formed near the upper reaches of
Bermudian Creek inthe 1780s. Thereafter the earlier church became known
as Lower Bermudian. In 1873 the Reformed congregation dedicated their
own church building across the street. At the date of publication in
1980 the Lutheran congregation held the name "Lower Bermudian" and the
Reformed congregation was known as "Mt. Olivet United Church Of Christ."
I do not know enough about the subject to speculate upon the
relationship of the Gossenhoppen Register with this Mt. Olivet church.
If someone on the List knows how pastoral acts came to be included in
the Gossenhoppen Register, I would be interested in seeing the answer
posted.
