"Eugene VAN REED, a Reading Man in Japan 1859-1872" is about this
Reading PA native who went to Japan and worked for the United States
Consul. Published a pocketbook of Japanese - English phrases, as well as
"The Opening Wedge" which was a work discussing the Japanese politics of
the era. Assisted in plot to smuggle two samurai ship commanders
involved in British fleet bombing of Kagoshima. Worked for the American
company of Heard & Co. and used his influence with the Japanese Mikado
to transact business. Appointed Hawaiian Consul General to Japan and
negotiated sending first Japanese emigrants to Hawaii. Wood block prints
of Van Reed shown. 10 1/2 pages. "Architectural Survivals in Berks" is a
6 page article about early Germanic style houses, barns, and
outbuildings. Log cabin, stone, half timber. Pent roof construction,
clay roof tile, and other information on local architecture.
