Alms House, aka the Poor house, was established 1824 in Cumru
Township. From within Cumru Township, in 1908 the boro of Shillington was
incorporated. Most, maybe all, of the Alms house found itself within the
Shillington boro limits. So there were not two houses, just the usual
shifting of government boundries. Today, much of the land of the Alms
house was taken by the Governor Mifflin School District. Confusion may
also exist when you refer to a location by the post office which serves the
area, as the Shillington Post Office, I believe existed before the boro
incorporated. And today, by some wisdom I don't understand, the Post
Office refers to everything as Reading, even though the City of Reading
could be 5 miles away in some cases.
