Bight's disease was closely akin to tonsillitis (or strep throat) which
affected and ultimately destroyed the filter of the kidney. After the
discovery and use of penicillin when the initial strep infection was
defeated because it could attack the kidney's Bright's disease greatly
decreased.
When I was young, it seemed I had it all the time. Elimination would stop
the body would swell and the fever would take over. There was also a little
boy in the ward with my who was diagnosed with Nephrosis -- an advanced
stage where the filters had already been destroyed an I can remember that
his abdomen would become so distended that they would "tap" him by inserting
a syringe and tube into his abdomen and draining out the fluid into a pail.
(A little archaic as I remember.) He died about 15 years later waiting for a
kidney transplant as dialysis didn't work.
It was quite prevalent in the 30s and 40s -- and references to it are found
throughout history.
