My great grandfather was born out of wedlock. He was living with his mother
and her parents when the census was taken. Luckily our last name is
unusual, so I was able to narrow down the choices as far as the father was
concerned. I did not check church records. He even lied or did not know
who his father was when he applied for a marriage license. I would suggest
checking the application for marriage. Maybe that will tell you something.
Also, my husband's grandmother's father was never revealed. We believe he
was an Indian. If his grandmother had been a male, we would have been able
to prove this through a blood test.
