Nelson, does your Pennsylvania Line book have info on the same mystery about Caernarvon's borders?
Is part of it in Lancaster and part in Berks?
Where is that dividing line?
Thanks
A deed from a person in Chester Co of abt1814 shows land in Caernarvon, Lancaster Co was purchased.
Was interested in whether to search in Lancaster Co for any later transactions or in Berks! I didn't realize some of it was in Lancaster Co!

Hello Glenn and Listers,
I had a very similar mystery in Berks Co. where I found what I first
thought was a man reported in Brecknock Twp. early in the year with
another reference to him in Robeson Twp. later the same year. It turned
out they were not the same individual but were first cousins with the
same names. My comment may not prove to be helpful in your case, but I
just mention my dilemma and its resolution to warn you of this not
unusual situation where cousins with the same names can make things very
confusing. Germans seem to have been more prone to duplicating family
names like this than were the Scots who lived in the same area of PA.
To get directly to your question, the following is drawn from
Pennsylvania Line, 4th ed. (1990):
The Union Twp. you are looking at was formed in 1752 from Coventry Twp.
while that area was still in Lancaster Co. When Berks Co. was formed in
1752, this area came into Berks from eastern Lancaster Co. (In 1729,
when Lancaster Co. was formed, that area had come into Lancaster Co.
from Chester Co.)
The same reference shows that Robeson Twp. was formed in 1729 in
Lancaster Co., i.e., the same year Lancaster Co. was formed. Then
Robeson Twp. came into Berks Co. from eastern Lancaster Co. when Berks
was formed in 1752.
The confusing divisions and subdivisions of these counties and townships
was necessitated by the very rapid growth of population and the
difficulties of travelling over distances in those days to conduct
government business.
Hope this helps.
