I am curious as to why an attorney would be made guardian of teenage children
of a widow. I wonder if perhaps his wife was a relative.
An Ermentrout was the attorney who handled the will for my 3rd
great-grandfather. The estate left considerable property and the widow was a bright and
"knew her own mind" given the infighting that occurs in the legal documents to
settle the estate.
I guess my question is, what are the usual reasons that an attorney is made
guardian of children. I have never seen it happen when one of the parents is
alive, in good health, financially secure. Is there some historical
perspective in Pa in the 1850s that say a wife has no rights.
Thank for any suggestions.
