Looking for any information pertaining to the ancestry of Daniel and
Mary Spangler who settled in what is now Franklin Co., VA around 1773.
Their great grandson wrote a brief family history in the early 1900's
which says Daniel and Mary came "from Germany to the vicinity of York
Co., PA and later moved to Virginia". Daniel was born about 1716 and
died in November 1787. Mary was born 1720 and died 1820 per tombstone
inscription. I have been searching for information on their ancestry
for over 35 years and been unable to find anything to document the
family legends.
Daniel and Mary's children were: Daniel 1747-1823; George 1749-1793;
John 1751-1851; Mary Hannah 1753-1833; Mary Elizabeth 1759-____; and
Mary 1761-____. Most of this information is from Bible records
extracted in 1916.
Undocumented legend says that Daniel's father was named Jacob and Mary's
maiden name was Nofsinger (Naufsinger). In October 1788 Mary, via a
Deed of Gift, gave all her personal property in Franklin Co., VA to "my
loving Friend John Naufsinger" and moved to what is now Floyd Co., VA to
live with her eldest son Daniel, Jr. A lot of the information on the
internet as well as LDS records say that Daniel's parents were Jacob and
Elizabeth Stophel Spangler which I believe to be incorrect based on this
Jacob's will.
Daniel and Mary's daughter Hannah later married John Noffsinger
(Nofsinger, Naufsinger) and moved to Muhlenburg Co., Kentucky.
Land records in Bedford Co., VA show Daniel Spangler and John Nofsinger
jointly owned "a plantation" in Bedford in 1773. Daniel, in his will of
1787, said "John Nofsinger is to make her (Mary) a deed for his land".
An early history of Floyd Co., VA says two of the early settlers were
Daniel and John Spangler who came to Floyd from York Co., PA where
Daniel purchased a mill on Pine Creek in 1792 from William Logan who had
purchased it from Josiah Terry in 1787. I assume that these were Daniel
and John sons of Daniel and Mary. This mill, which is currently
standing, is about 30 miles from where Daniel (Senior) and Mary lived in
Franklin Co., VA.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
