Confirmation is a "rite of passage" similar to a bar mitzvah in the Jewish
tradition.
Observed in the Catholic Church and the more liturgical main line
denominations
(Lutheran, Episcopal, etc.), it is a confirmation by the young person
of the baptismal vows taken by the parents when the child was an infant.
It usually occurs in the middle teen years,
and has been a rite since at least the Medieval period. And yes, it
pretty much
confirms that the child was there.
