Hi Annie,
Your idea is great. I wish I could be there.
In Buffalo, NY there is a large cemetery, Forest Lawn, that gives several
tours. The most popular is a visit to the tombstones of many noted people from
the area, among whom is Millard Fillmore, president of the United States in
1850. He appears from behind his tombstone to give a little information about
himself. Many others appear as the tour approaches their resting places. They are
all in costume and give talks about themselves. On another tour a docent gives
a nature talk about the numerous trees situated around the grounds. It is a
beautiful place and in the early days people used to come to the cemetery to
picnic with friends and family.
In Lewiston, NY, where I live, there is a yearly historical play given called
the "Marble Orchard". It starts out in the old Presbyterian Church then
progresses outside to the cemetery next to the church. The scene is similar to the
Forest Lawn presentation except that in a small village, such as ours, the old
timers buried there can interact with each other. Lewiston is called the
Gateway to the West so there is a lot of history here. It certainly gets many
people thinking about the early days. There is a fee for all productions and of
coourse all are in costume.
Good luck with your ideas.
