RAILROAD CASUALTIES
Following are the names of people who were injured or killed on the line
of the P.R.R. in this vicinity (Tyrone) during the year just passed (1888).
Tyrone Herald Jan. 3, 1889
Jan. 7 - Andrew Peppernick, aged 27; killed.
Jan. 13 - William Murtof, aged 23, brakeman; finger mashed.
Jan. 18 - Reuben Hauser, killed in Lock Haven yard.
Jan. 25 - William T. Bailey, aged 42; residence, Grazierville; two ribs
broken.
Feb. 15 - Calvin Miller, engineer, aged 37; end of front finger on left hand
cut off.
Feb. 16 - M. Buchkorick, 35 years, Hungarian by birth, residence unknown,
instantly killed at No. 13 bridge.
March 5 - John Lewis, run over at Osceola, left arm mashed and amputated at
the shoulder.
March 15 - H. R. Yoder, aged 21; residence Mifflin; fireman; cut above right
eye.
May 23 - James Welsh, aged 21; residence Baltimore; left leg mashed by
attempting to jump on train; amputated by Dr. Gemmill; removed to Altoona Hospital
and got well.
June 9 - Leonard J. Murphy, aged 21, residence Montgomery, Lycoming county;
cut about the head; sent to hospital; recovered.
June 14 - John Gill, aged 45; residence Huntingdon; knocked down by being
struck with train; sent to Huntingdon and recovered.
June 19 - John H. Rothrock, aged 28; freight fireman; residence, Lewistown;
finger mashed while pulling coupling pin; sent to his home.
June 21 - William Pride, aged 16; residence, Huntingdon; laborer at Barree;
head cut; taken to Altoona Hospital and died.
June 27 - Harry S. Cook, aged 19; residence, Harrisburg; brakeman; back hurt
by falling off train at Tyrone; sent home and got well.
July 12 - Philip Zeilinger, aged 32; brakeman; residence, Tyrone; struck with
a stone thrown by a boy while on his train; got well.
Aug. 7 - Lewis A. Morningstar, aged 32; residence, Huntingdon; brakeman;
three fingers mashed while making a coupling; sent home and recovered.
Oct. 5 - Ellen Decker, aged 39; residence, Altoona; struck by freight engine
west of Tyrone; face cut; sent to Altoona Hospital; recovered.
Oct. 16 - William K. Hicks, aged 21; residence, Huntingdon; left leg and left
hand cut off; supposed to be trying to board a train; died.
Nov. 13 - William F. Zang, brakeman; residence, Harrisburg; middle finger of
left hand mashed; sent home.
Dec. 6 - Wilhelm Kueckelman, German; instantly killed at Fostoria.
