Thomas B. Conrad, postmaster of Lilly, is a veteran of the World War and
a member of one of the early pioneer families of Cambria County. He was
born at Lilly, July 31, 1895, and is a son of Simon J. and Catherine
(Burns) Conrad.

Simon J. Conrad was born at Lilly, the son of James and Susan (Coons)
Conrad. James Conrad was born at Conewago, Pa. in 1811, and died in
1879. He settled in Washington Township, Cambria County, in 1849 on the
present site of Lilly, which was settled by Thomas Lilly. Mr. Conrad
was a mill owner and his son, Samuel J., later operated the mill, which
was purchased by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1905. To Mr. and Mrs.
James Conrad the following children were born: Francis, died in 1920;
John, deceased; Julia, married Peter McTamany, deceased; Thomas, died in
Missouri; Christina, deceased, was the wife of Henry Freidhoff; Peter,
deceased; Mary, deceased; Caroline, deceased; Albert, deceased; Simon
J., the father of the subject of this sketch; and Margaret, decased.
Simon J. Conrad was married May 21, 1878, to Miss Catherine Burns, the
daughter of John and Anna (Murphy) Burns, both natives of Ireland and
now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Burns had the following children: Anna,
married James Toohey, lives at Mt. Washington, Pa.; Mary, married John
Burns, lives in Buffalo, NY; John, deceased; Lawrence, deceased; and
Mrs. Conrad. To Simon J. and Catherine (Burns) Conrad the following
children were born: Mary Agnes, died at the age of 11 years; James,
lives at Cresson; Edward, lives at Conemaugh; Margaret married M.
Goodman, lives at Altoona; Francis Albert, lives at Altoona, Pa.;
Joseph, deceased; Paul, lives at Altoona, Pa.; Susan Ann, married
Charles McGuire, lives at Cresson; Phillip, deceased; and Thomas B., the
subject of this sketch.

Simon J. Conrad now lives retired at Lilly. He is a Republican and a
member of the Catholic Church. He has served as councilman and as
school director for a number of years. He has a wide acquaintance
throughout Cambria County and is well liked.

Thomas B. Conrad received his education in the schools of Lilly and for
a number of years engaged in road building work in Ohio. During the
World war he served in France with Company B, 21st Engineers. He was
discharged Aug 27, 1919. Mr. Conrad then went to Youngstown, Ohio and
later to Akron, Ohio where he did road building. He was appointed
postmaster of Lilly in 1922.

Mr. Conrad is a Republican, a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church,
and is affiliated with the American Legion. He is popular among his
many friends and acquaintances.
