The day it took me to get to an Internet browser with Java "stuff" was
the day www.civilwardata.com went from having free visitor access to
_not_ having free visitor access. I did buy a limited membership and
searched for my g-g-grandfather. The site has a "personnel" database
that, for Pennsylvania at least, seems only to sort by rank and date
mustered in. I don't know my ancestor's middle initial, and he had a
pretty common first name and surname, so there were 63 listings, none
any more identifiable as my gggf than the other.
If, however, you have more to start with than I did, the site may be of
help.
National Archives -- I've had a request in to NARA for 10-11 weeks now.
Someone told me his search took three months but was worth the wait. I
have faith that this will be the case with me, too. An e-mail to
with the word "form" in the subject will automatically generate a return
e-mail with details of how to obtain forms for several kinds of
genealogical research. Once you e-mail a request for the appropriate
form(s), it/they arrive via snail mail within a week or less.
