I can only say I appreciate the postings with or without mistakes. Also it
is not just something from the past- I have had mailings really butcher my
name- if someone in the future looks at some of these mailing lists they
would have no clue.
One more thing about these "mistakes". I can't say they are. It seems to
me the way the name is spelled today is more likely the mistake. My surname
is one. Monahan or Monghan or Manahan- who knows?? The one I've seen
spelled many different ways is Behe. No one is sure yet what it really was.
Prince Gallitzin spells it Buche and a naturalization in Huntingdon County
has it as Peche. Which one was original? I would say surely not Behe!
Soundex is a good system for many of these mispellings- only thing is it
even doesn't cover the Buche and Peche for Behe. I also got bitten early on
by the German Z's becoming S's (Zettlemoyer is Settlemoyer in the US). So
where was the mistake? For me I think its likely we're the ones spelling
the name grossly inaccurately and pronouncing these things even worse.
