Cambria County mines listed in the 1879-1880 PA Industrial Statistics volume vii by Lane S. Hart

Martin Mines operated by JC martin & Co. located a short distance from Portage on the PRR. J.C. Martin is general manager and David Patrick is mine superintendent.

Johnstown Mines located at Johnstown at the foot of the Allegheny mountains operated by Cambria Iron Company, John Fulton, general manager and John Cameron, superintendent of mines. Following mines are operated by this company, Rolling Mill mine, Conemaugh mine, Cushon mine.

Others listed by not discussed:
Woodvale Mine, Johnstown Manufacturing Company
Lloydsville Mine, Bell's Gap Railroad Company, R.G. Ford, superintendent
Old South Fork, South Fork Works Company, E.J. Hughes, superintendent
Stineman, operated by J.C. Stineman
Argyle No 1 and Argyle No 2, operated by Argyle Coal Company, T.L. Jones, superintendent
Stineman No 2, Stineman & Co operating this mine, George Stineman, superintendent
Luke & Heist, operated by Luke & Heist, D.W. Luke is superintendent

And I am sure this is but a few of the mines in the area. Cambria Iron Company's coal mines were lately Bethlehem Steel's but I have heard there is only strip mining these days occurring no deep shaft mines in the area. The Leahey and Piper families basically ran the coal companies in Lilly during the early 1900's and had company stores for their employees.

Please note this is basicallly all I have so I apologize to those of you asking for more- I just don't have it. There is a map on the Cambria County website that shows the locations of many early coal mines. I highly recommend looking at that map.

Dave
