Subject: [PaCambri] Andrew Phillip Baker & Catharine Waltz Family

Hi folks,
I've been working on my WALTZ web site, and am at the point where I'm
creating a family bio sheet for the family of Andrew Phillip BAKER &
Catharine WALTZ.

I don't have a whole lot of info on this family, and I was wondering if
there are any BAKER researchers on this list who might be able to fill in
some gaps for me.

Here's what I have so far:

Catharine Waltz was born in France in 1830, the daughter of George M. Waltz
and Catharine Hines. She emigrated with her parents and her older brother,
John to the United States sometime between 1830 and March of 1836. The
family left France from the port of LeHavre, and first settled in
Hollidaysburg, Blair County, PA.

By 1841, the family had permanently moved to the farm they bought in Chest
Township, Cambria County.

Catharine married Andrew Phillip Baker on 11/29/1850 at St. Benedict Church,
Carrolltown, PA. Their witnesses were Antonio Baker and Maria Hipps, and
the priest was Maurus Zacherl, OSB. Andrew was a blacksmith from Indiana
County.

>From his entry in Samuel Wiley's Biographical Cyclopedia, Cambria Co, PA

"Andrew T. Baker, a native of Germany, was born in 1830, of parents,
Frederick and Magdalene Baker, no longer living. In 1852 he was united in
marriage in this country to Catherine Waltz, who was also a native of
Germany, born in 1829. Her parents, George and Catherine (Harris) Waltz,
are deceased. The offspring of this union is eight children: Andrew P.,
Mary E., John, Ella J., Anna E., George M., Catherine J., and Joseph T.
When the war of the rebellion was inaugurated, he became impressed with a
desire to take an active and leading part. He was 35 years of age and had
been employed as a blacksmith when he was enrolled from Hollidaysburg, Pa as
a private in Co. A 58th Pa VI. He did not take part in any regular battles
as his services consisted of scouting, skirmishing, guard and garrison duty.
Upon close of the war he was honorably discharged June 1865. He wife's
brothers, Jacob and George, served in the late war. Comrade Baker passed to
his reward in 1868. His widow has a pension and her address in Carrollton,
Pa."

[Note that there are several mistakes in the above entry: Andrew's middle
initial was "P" for Phillip; Catharine spelled her name with an "a"; Andrew
was born in 1829 and Catharine was born in 1830; and Catharine's mother's
maiden name was Hines, not Harris.]

Catharine & Andrew had 8 children (not necessarily in the correct order--I
only have birth dates on two of the children):

Andrew Phillip, born December 16, 1852
George M., born January 18, 1862
John
Mary E.
Anna E.
Ella J.
Catherine J.
Joseph T.

Andrew died when he was only 39 years old in 1868, but Catharine died in
1912 at the age of 82. They are both buried at St. Benedict Roman Catholic
Cemetery, Carrolltown, PA

Are there any BAKERS out there with further information on the children (or
parents!)in this family? I have tombstone photos that I would be happy to
share for Andrew Phillip Sr. and Catharine (the parents.) I would, however,
love to find some real pictures of this family--any out there?

Thanks for your help,
Linda
