I went through the Cambria Co census from 1800 to 1840, and noted all the
non-whites.
There was one slave listed in 1800, 6 in 1810, none after that.
Godfrey Wilmore of Summerhill Twp was the first free black man in the
county. He was a freed slave from Harford Co, Maryland, who married Mary
Skelly, a white woman, who;'s family also came to Cambria Co. Godfrey is in
the 1810 census as a free white man, Mary is in the 1820 census as a white
woman, with the rest of her family being colored. In 1830 their 2 sons and a
daughter are listed as colored, with their spouses white, but in 1840, the
two sons were listed as having all colored in their family, and the
daughters as all white.
William Harshberger and family are in Conemaugh Twp, beginning 1830. This is
a common Mennonite name. Although all the members of the house are listed as
colored, I suspect William may have been white, and his wife Jane was black.
Their son John Harshberger was listed as black in 1840 & 1850, but I'm not
sure about afterwards.
In 1830 & 1840 more black households were in existence, particularly in
Johnstown & Conemaugh Twp. These include Edinborough Smith, Ignatius Brown,
Richard Washington, James Elliott, George Lewis, Moses Armstrong, Samuel &
Isaac Lindsey, Joshua Newman, Isaac Simpson, William Porter, John Thomas,
Samuel Wilson, Thomas Smith, Angeline Wallace & Elizabeth Gabes.
The names listed are the names of the head of household. The "all other
free" in 1800 & 1810 could include Indians, etc, who were not white, but
free.
