Hello everyone,
Yesterday I received a copy of my grandfather's Social Security number application, and finally have his mother's maiden name.
My grandfather, Daniel Webster Smith, was the son of John Smith and Matilda Almstead. They were living in Johnstown in 1889 and survived the flood. His siblings were;
John
Mary - m. Dave Price Mary was born abt. 1865 and she was the oldest child.
Charles - m.2 Harriet
Hattie - m. Billy Auman
Bertha May - m. Charles Joseph Devine
Louella - On August 16, 1912 Ella's address was 803 Highland Ave, N. Braddock, PA., m. Jack Hawn.
After more than twenty years of marriage, John deserted his family, went west and became partners in a mining operation. Was he a miner in Johnstown? I don't know. How long were they in Johnstown? Don't know. After several attempts to find these people, I am beginning to think they may have come from one of the New England states. I haven't found them in any census record online.
Any help or suggestions of where to look for John and Matilda would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely
Margaret Mays Hasson
Ohio
