To scout out GAR records one needs to be a real detective.
In this area (Kansas) one can find some GAR Records at the State Historical
Society, our American Legion did not have the local records (our County
Historical Society helped inventory their records) plus the county
historical society has some. Some of the chapters in the small towns
probably just left their records with the last person who used them
(secretary or president) and so far they have not surfaced.

The Kansas State Historical Society has a listing of the deaths of GAR
members. The newspapers posted "In Memoriam" when a member died. I did not
find obituaries for my great-grandfathers, but did find those Memorials 3/4
of a column long that didn't say a word about the individual except his
name.

Good luck in your searches!
