To anyone disappointed by this PaCambria mailing list:
I think I've been on this list for about five years now ... Dianne or
Lynn can check, but anyway, that's not important. The point I want to
make, is that I have learned so much from this list, I would like to say
thank you. It was very helpful to me, for finding my Cambria (and
other!) ancestors.
I remember when I didn't understand the geo-political divisions of
Pennsylvania (living in Louisiana, where we have parishes, wards, and
districts, instead of boroughs, townships, etc), and it was here that it
was explained so that I could understand it. Also someone in this group
provided me with the marriage information for one of my ancestors ...
which opened doors. It was here, too, that some have contacted me with
gen information for a part of my family line. I've learned about the
archives and the cambria county courthouse, and the Cambria county
Library, about the Johnstown flood, the cemetery that collapsed because
of flooding (re-interrment in other cemeteries), about the history of
Summitville (now Cresson), about Fr. Ledoux's books ... people have done
lookups for me ... I may have found the information myself, but only
after years of research. It was here that I learned there was a
"Honeymoon Express" leaving from Johnstown, which took couples to MD on
a regular basis so they could get married. People have even snail
mailed me information. Plus, I've read lots of genealogical tidbits
about other parts of Pennsylvania, and just genealogy in general.
I could go on, but I won't. What I have observed from the five years of
receiving Pacambria emails is that sometimes the list is quiet;
sometimes heavy. Sometimes, the chatter is off-topic, sometimes it is
dead on. But always, it's dependable, and steady. You only get out of
something what you put into it; maybe your expectations are what's at
fault here, if you are disappointed by spates of casual conversation.
Hang in there, and you will see lots of genealogical gems contributed by
our members. I think this is true of lots of lists ... it's the nature
of the beast. Anytime you get a group of people who share the common
interest of having ancestors in the same location, but with diverse
interests, occupations, resources, of all ages, both genders, and living
in all parts of the world, expect to see a wide range of contributions. :)
Now that is my two cents. :)
