Also, use the wild card asterisk, with at least the first three letters
of names, first and/or last name, and you will get more hits that might
include those you want. Search by first name only, if it's a rare one,
especially if you know the area.

Ancestry's indexes are sometimes the pits when you have an uncommon
name to look for...it always amazes me what they come up with, even
when the census record itself is perfectly plain and legible.

For another common problem, the name George comes to mind, as it is
very often typed as Geroge in an index. A typo to be sure, but it sure
does limit a search for Georges, and typing in Geo* will not find those
people.
