I have researched in the Clearfield County Historical Society and they
have some old Houtsdale newspapers on microfilm. I cannot tell you the
dates of the papers, but perhaps you could find some details about the mine
explosion. They will answer queries there.
The Special Collections at Indiana University of Pennsylvania has
inherited a lot of mining documents and have a series of Annual Reports of
the Department of Mining [or whatever it was called at the time], published
yearly in hardback volumes. These reports give detailed explanations of
all mining accidents and the names of the miners. One down side to this is
that the mine must have been large enough to be inspected by the department.
That means that if it was a small house coal mine the data will not be in
the volumes. The second problem is that they are filed by Mining Districts,
and these have changed over the years, causing some problems. Again, I do
not know when these Volumes started or stopped printing, but IUP has them.
IUP also has the United Mine Worker's Journal on microfilm. Again, I do not
know the years. It contained some obituaries of members. It was probably
published later than your dates, but might help someone else.
I hope these resources might help you or others find out about your
ancestor. Could you let me know if you can find pertinent information.
