Johnstown Tribune, Tuesday, Feb. 14, 1922
Altoona, Feb. 14 – John Baker, a well known resident of the city, died at the
home of his daughter, Mrs. William P. Sherry, 3930 Fifth avenue, at 8:45 o’
clock last night of a complication of diseases. Mr. Baker was born in Germany
March 6, 1841 and resided at St. Lawrence, Cambria County, for many years prior
to coming to this city. He has resided here for the past 20 years and is a
retired farmer. Mr. Baker is survived by the following children; Mrs. William
P. Sherry, at whose home he died; Louis, George and F. J. all of Altoona;
Sister Martina and Sister Delores, of the Benedictine Order, at Elizabeth, NJ;
Sister Vincent DePaul, of the Sisters of Charity, Greensburg; M. C. of
Pittsburg, and one brother, Charles, of St. Boniface, Cambria County. Funeral services
will be announced later. Interment will be made in St. Lawrence Cemetery,
Cambria County.
At a recent family reunion I discovered that the John Baker listed above was
the brother of my great grandfather Charles Becker who was married to the
Huber sisters Dorothy and Catherine Huber. John (Becker) Baker was married to
Elizabeth Diertrich whose obit I also posted on line. If anyone has any
information on any of the children of John and Elizabeth (Dietrich) Baker please
contact me. I know that John and Charles and two additional brothers who also came
to live in this country. One was named Francis and was living with his
brother Charles at the time of the 1880 census. I believe he is buried in St.
Lawrence. The second brother I am less certain of. From what my grandfather told
me his name was Oswald. From information I learned at the family reunion he
might have been a priest.
