Hello Cathi!
Thank you for your note below. There is no question
that Charles "Delaphan, Delly, Deli" Cleary
was a brother to Thomas Cleary and that both of them
were children of James Cleary and Margaret Jane Cleary
(sp. Clary)and indeed were brothers. It is the
relationship between James and my ggf Thomas Cleary
and the surname of James wife which need to be
established. The two Thomas are not the same person.
One died in 1893 at the age of 25 and his father and
mother are given by his brother as James and Margaret
Jane Cleary. My gga's always referred to Deli as
"cousin" as does my one remainging aunt
(second cousin). The families lived in the same small
geographic location and there were no other James of
Thomas Cleary's in the area according to census
records. I have a marriage cert from ST. Mary's PA
for a James Cleary who lists his father as Thomas
Cleary and his mother as Mary Duly(Deely penmanship?),
there is a death record for a James Cleary at St
Marys, Pa in 1873 and listed as being from Emporium.
This fits with the ages of his children and the ages
of the first born to Patrick Connors and James' widow
Margaret Jane. My ggf death cert list his father as
Thomas Cleary and his mother as Mary Pardon. The
surname Pardon does not appear in Ireland. My own
feeling is that when asked for his mother's name my
ggm (married to this man for more than 50 years) gave
the first name and someone asked her a question which
she did not register at once and she queried back with
"pardon?" and they wrote it in as a surname. I
believe that in all probability that the surname
should have been Duly
(Deely sp?) This line is so confusing and convoluted
that it is very difficult to explain and work with.
I do so much appreciate your reply..not a lot of
people would take the time to "brainstorm" on an issue
such as this. I just am so frustrated because I can't
even find a record of the second marriage of Margaret
Jane Cleary to one Patrick Connors nor a baptismal
cert on any of their children. Margaret Jane is found
on the 1870 census and the 1880 census with her
perspective husbands and children yet the church has
no records of the marriage or of baptismals. 1870
census says Deli born Eng..rest of census records say
PA
Thanks again!
