This article appeared in yesterday's (May 31, 2003) CENTRE DAILY TIMES.
I thought I would send it along for anyone who may have had relatives
from Johnstown.

"Today (May 31, 2003) marks the 114th anniversary of the Johnstown
flood. Here are some facts about the disaster that killed 2,209 people,
from the Johnstown Area Heritage Association:

*More tha 750 victims were never identified and rest in the Plot of the
Unknown in Grandview Cemetery.

*One thousand, six hundred homes were destroyed and the flood caused $17
million in property damage.

*Bodies were found as far away as Cincinnati and as late as 1911.

*There was a 14-mile distance between the dam that failed and Johnstown.

*Flood lines were found as high as 89 feet above river level.

*The great wave measured 35-40 feet high and hit the town at 40 miles
per hour.

*More than $3.5 million was collected for the Johnstown relief effort
from people throughout the United States and 18 foreign countries.
