Notes for HENRY THOMAS MCCLELLAND MILLER:
[ken ostrum lewis tree.FTW]

Tommy Miller was blinded in a dynamite explosion acccident at a coal mine
in Cameron County,
Pa. The story goes: he and his father had set a dynamite charge and were
waiting for it to go off. They
waited the required time, then Tommy's father, who was in charge, said he
would check it out. Just as
his father stood up to check the dynamite, Tommy saw a wisp of smoke come
up and knew the fuse had
relit. He jumped up to pull his father out of harm's way just as the
dynamite exploded in Tommy's face
and he was blinded. His wife, Grace Crum died after he was blinded. A
picture of her in her casket
was taken on the chance Tommy would regain his sight. He never did and
his eyes were removed for
medical reasons.
Despite his handicap, he managed to attend a university, played several
musical instruments,
including a guitar, violin and mandolin. He could type, read and write in
Braille and could tune a
piano.
He left the Emporium area and lived in St. Petersburg Fl and also in St.
Louis, MO. For many
years he came back to Emporium where he stood on the street corner,
playing his mandolin and
receiving donations from many residents, a great many of whom were
relatives. He would call his aunt
Violet Ostrum to find out when Sylvania's payday was so he could come to
town on the right weekend.
I [Ken Ostrum] remember coming out of the local bank and Tommy was
playing his mandolin on
the corner. I had not seen him for several years and approached him with
those chilling words to most
sighted people, "Hi, Tommy, do you know who this is?" His immediate
response was, "I don't know
which one, but you're one of Aunt Violet's boys." I also remember as a
boy watching him shave. Hhe
would pull out pieces of sand which had worked their way to the surface
of his skin. He mentioned he
dulled a lot of razors that way.
His daughter would fill his plate at dinner time and tell him the
potatoes are at 3 O'clock, the meat at 6
O'clock, the peas at 9 O'clock He wouldn't miss a bite.
A story is told of Tommy while living in St. Petersburg. He was playing
for donations as he often
did and a gung-ho policeman watched his activities as he went in to eat
and walk the streets, etc.
Because he was so familiar with the area he did many things without help.
The officer hauled him in to
the station on fraud charges, but the doctor who was called in embarassed
the officer by saying, "This
man's no fake." The officer objected, indicating the doctor was too quick
on his ruling and had not fully
examined Tommy, The doctor said, "I don't have to, he doesn't have any
eyeballs."
Tommy had a great sense of humor and a great personality.

Notes for GRACE PHOEBE CRUM:
1920 - Thursday, February 1 - Emporium Independent- front page: "DEATH
CLAIMS MRS. THOS.
H. MILLER"
Phoebe Grace Miller, wife of Thos. H. Miller, died at her home on East
Allegheny avenue on Sunday m
orning, February 15, 1920, at 3:20 o'clock, of pneumonia, after an
illness of only a few days which
began with influenza. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Crum of
Sinnamahoning, and was
born at that place on March 26, 1889, and was married June 10, 1914, to
Thomas H. Miller, of
Driftwood. About three years ago mr. Miller lost the sight of both eyes
in an explosion at Drurys Run,
near Renovo, and some time later they came to Emporium and opened a
little store in East Emporium.
It is indeed a sad case and to add to it, Mrs. Miller's mother is
reported at the point of death in the Kane
hospital.
Deceased was a good, faithful and uncomplaining wife and mother and the
blow is a hard one to the
doubly afflicted husband and father. She is survived by her husband and
one daughter, Twila, aged 4
years; her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Iva Ensign of Mt. Jewett, and
Lillie, at home, and two brothers,
Stephen, of Monongahela, and Leon, at home.
The funeral was held from the m.E. church at sinnamahoning Wednesday
morning at 10 o'clock and
interment was made in the Crum cemetery at that place.
LATER - We have just learned that Mrs. Crum died Monday night and that
mother and daughter
were buried at the same time.
"Wyside" --- A beautiful life ends not in death. No death in recent years
has caused more regret and
sorrow in this vicinity that that of Mrs. Thomas Miller at Emporium on
Sunday. She had been ill for a
few days of pneumonia. Her mother, Mrs. Richard Crum, is at present in
the Kane hospital a very sick
woman.
