Subject: Don's obituary collection

I was looking on the internet a few days ago and ran across Don Hefright's
list of obituaries. I haven't heard from Don for a while and didn't want to
bother him so I went to the library to look through the obituaries that are
in the locked case. I was really surprised to find that Don had given them
beautifully indexed and copied obituaries...I mean a whole counter top
filled will big, thick, beautiful three ring binders. What a terrific
resource! I wanted to browse through them in interest and curiosity... I
mean really delve into the books... but they are guarded as gold (and I
agree that they are truly invaluable) but to use them you have to STAND at
the front desk while other people check out books and go about their library
duties around you, people can only look at one of the books at a time so you
have to get the librarian to fetch you a different volume when you are
done...I felt kind of like a suspected felon...I hoped that they weren't
going to strip search me when I finished:) I was able to make copies so I
picked the surnames that I was interested in and copied them and took them
home with me to read.
I hope that Don lets us make copies and put together the collection too for
our library in the future...and hopefully we can have a back up on file so
we can allow the curious researcher the pleasure of reading, discovering and
investigating the contents of the book the way that genealogy is supposed to
be done.
Genealogy is meant to be a fun and challenging hobby! I hope this doesn't
sound like I am slamming the library because I don't mean to sound that way,
I was just a little disappointed.
