Hello to the list!
I am one of the long-time lurkers on the list. My mother and I were greatly
surprised to learn that our ancestor, JOHN ROSENDALE (JOHAN ARON ROSENDAHL
in church records). had evidently lived in Cameron County when he first
emigrated from Sweden in l869. He is listed in the 1870 census for Cameron
County, living in a boarding house with other men.
We think his wife, Enga, joined him in 1871. We next found them in the
Minnesalbum, a history of Tabor Lutheran Church in Kane, McKean County, PA,
listed as charter members in the mid-1870s. The 1880 census lists them living in
Ludlow, McKean County, PA, and church records for Moriah Lutheran Church in
Ludlow state that they moved on to Youngsville, Warren County, PA in 1884.
They eventually bought farmland in Torpedo, Warren County, PA and lived out the
ir lives there.
Along the way, they had four children and perhaps a fifth that died.
What I have been trying to determine through my years of lurking and
digesting the history of other families in the area, is:
1. Why would a Swede have gone to Cameron County in 1869? Was there
recruitment of certain ethnic groups to certain industries?
2. Would a Cameron County-McKean County-Warren County migration through the
1870s and early 1880s have followed the construction of the railroad through
northwestern PA? Do the family locations of residence at certain dates
suggest a type of employment?
3. What kind of public records might exist from 1869 through the early
1870s for Cameron County where we might find more information on our ROSENDALE
ancestors? Was there a Lutheran church in the area at this time?
Thank you in advance to anyone who takes time to answer my questions and to
suggest where we may find more information about our Swedish ancestors in
Cameron County!
