Rebecca, Linda, Larry and everyone else:
The Rutherford Co. TN Court Minutes found by Linda recentlyis a very
important find as it identifies children of John Pace, Sr. and
Sarah(Anderson) Pace who have not previously been identified, namely, James,
Linnyand Matilda. It also seems to refute(per Rebecca’s analysis) that Ruth
Lambert Pace was a daughter of John andSarah, unless she was for some reason
referred to as Linny or Matilda in thecourt minutes.
The earliest record I can find showing Ruth Lambert Pace asa daughter of John
and Sarah is from Randy and Dena Farrar (<A HREF="mailto:"></A>) from a Oct 14,
1999post to the PACE mail list, as follows:
“Trying to take my Pace line back further than my ggg grandmotherRuth Lambert
Pace who married my ggg grandfather William King Geaslin. They were married
about 1829 and settled inEllis County, Texas in 1849. They cameby wagon
caravan with their nine children and her brother, John Pace, and hiswife,
Sarah McCracken, and their six children. They came from Murfreesboro,
Rutherford County, Tennessee.”
The above John Pace who m. Sarah McCracken was definitely ason of John Pace,
Sr. and Sarah Anderson. I will inquire about Randy and Dena’s source for
identifying RuthLambert Pace as a brother of John Pace, Jr.
As to the James Pace in the court minutes, it seems quitepossible that he
could be the James Pace on the 1850 census of Rutherford Co,TN, age 34, b.
TN, wife Mary, daughters Margaret, Mary M. and Elizabeth. His age is
consistent with the birth yearinferred by Rebecca as 1815, considering the
inaccuracy of census ages. I had previously speculated that this Jamescould
be one of the unidentified sons of John Sr’s brother, William Pace,Jr. But I
prefer Rebecca’s suggestionthat that son of William, Jr. was the Ezekiel Pace
in the 1830 census ofRutherford Co.
As to Barnabas Strickland, who was the security for SarahAnderson Pace’s
guardianship of her minor children, he is almost certainly ason of Solomon
Strickland and Amy Pace of Edgecombe Co, NC. Amy was a sister of the William
Pace, Sr.who married Ruth Lambert and was the patriarch of the Rutherford Co,
TN Paces.
Barnabas Strickland was born sometime between 1765 and 1790and was one of 13
children of Solomon (per PSA Bulletin 6/2000)
The following is from the book, PSA Bulletins, Vol 1, pg 228:
“The Stricklands were associated with the family of William Pace,Sr., after
they resettled in Rutherford County, Tennessee. A Barnaby Strickland was
very helpful to MaryAnn Pace, widow of James, there. He postedbond as her
security when she was appointed guardian of her children. He also bought
some items at the sale of James’perishable estate. He seems to have beena
close friend.”
This refers to Mary Ann Loving and James Pace, Sr., brother ofJohn Pace, Sr.
Gordon W. Pace
